Goals:

The Water Environment Federation (EDF) and the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) are proposing to partner with the Johnson Foundation to take the next steps in developing a roadmap for the implementation of a nutrient management vision. This would entail a meeting of a small (~20 people) group to develop an expanded vision statement and plan future steps for the initiative. This would be a high-level discussion to 1) develop the right vision, 3) establish the right timeline, and 3) discuss the right technologies. The vision development would help move the water sector toward the new paradigm of nutrient management. The timeline would include milestones such as the July 2013 Nutrient Removal and Recovery conference and the October 2013 WEFTEC conference and could use the WEF Energy Roadmap as a model for program development. The technology discussion would provide an overview of current and future technologies with an emphasis on innovation and a consideration of realistic opportunities for nutrient management. This meeting would be followed by a meeting later in the year of a larger group of sector leaders, regulators, and other stakeholders to launch the program.
